Paraffin Wax for Candles: 5 Reasons Coconut Soy Is Better

Paraffin Wax for Candles: 5 Reasons Coconut Soy Is Better

7 minute read

Candles have been around for centuries, and over time, the type of wax used to make them has changed. Today, there are many different types of wax available, but the most popular wax is Paraffin wax. There’s a surge of popularity in recent times with the introduction of healthier alternatives such as Soy wax, Coconut wax (we use Coconut Soy Blend), and some other natural waxes which are more expensive come from Apricot and Beeswax. Paraffin wax, a wax that has been the most widely used since candles existed and still is the most used wax because it’s a lot cheaper to produce.

Paraffin wax candles are made with a type of petroleum-based wax that is derived from crude oil.

While Paraffin wax for candles are the most common type of candle on the market, coconut soy candles offer a number of benefits that make them a better choice for many people.

Here are some of the main reasons why Coconut Soy wax is recommended over candles containing Paraffin wax.

1. Coconut soy wax candles are much cleaner than Paraffin wax candles.

Anyone who has ever burned a candle knows that soot can quickly build up on the sides of the jar or container. Not only is this unsightly, but it can also be dangerous, as inhaling the little black soot can lead to respiratory problems. Unlike paraffin wax candles, which produce large amounts of soot as they burn, coconut soy candles release very little soot into the air.

Most petroleum-based products come with some sort of health risk, especially when they get burned for hours on end and builds up in your body. These products release toxins such as toluene and benzene, which are well known harmful chemicals that causes headaches, lung problems, and even birth defects in some cases.

2. Coconut Soy wax burn much slower than Paraffin wax for candles

One of the things that deter people from buying a seemingly more expensive candle is the price tag. On the outside, it may seem that coconut soy candles, at $40 per 13 oz($3.07 per oz), is much more expensive than a candle you can pick up from Bath and Body Works which normally retail around $27 per 13 oz($1.86 oz per oz).

Seem like a much better deal right?

Actually, this is one of the biggest misconceptions of choosing Paraffin wax vs Coconut Soy wax, despite the health effects. When you actually measure the dollars per burn time rather than by the volume, we get much closer results.

This is because Parrafin wax burns much hotter than Coconut Soy wax or any other kinds of vegetable wax. Almost twice as fast, which means it offsets the burning time.

A standard 13 oz Paraffin candle can burn through within 40 hours which equates to about 3 hours per oz VS. a coconut soy candle with the same 13 oz can get you about 65 hours, depending on how well it’s maintained, netting about 5 hours per oz.

Paraffin wax (13 oz) - $24 (adjusted price from the 14.5 oz Bath and Body candle) – 40 hours – $0.60 dollars per hour burned

Coconut Soy wax (13 oz) $40 – 65 hours – $0.61 dollars per hour burned

In the end, when you run the calculations on which candles give you more bang for your buck, the higher quality candle in coconut soy wax, despite its health benefits and better materials (fancy jar, wooden wick, better wax), actually net a similar spend per hours burnt because it burns much slower than Paraffin wax, thus lasting you much longer.

3. Coconut Soy wax less likely to cause headaches than paraffin wax candles.

As a result of the nature of Paraffin wax, it actually causes headaches. This is one of the major problems that people face when shopping for candles. No one wants to buy something that’s supposed to make your calmer and end up giving you a major headache along with sinus issues right?

At declutterd, this is one of the reasons why we started creating candles in the first place. We suffered from having a sensitive nose and hard-to-remedy headaches like many of the consumers that don’t necessarily know the technicalities of candles wax.

Enjoy our entire collection of candles with zero candle headaches. Since our candlemaker is extremely sensitive to these candle headaches, we put ourselves in the forefront of this issue and spend lots of time testing to make sure that our scents are good for purchase.

4. Coconut soy candles are environmentally friendly

Even though all candles have an impact on the environment, coconut soy candles are more environmentally friendly than paraffin wax candles. This is because they are made from a renewable resource and are biodegradable. They also support sustainable farming: When you purchase coconut soy candles, you are supporting sustainable farming practices. This is because the coconut oil used to make these candles is usually sourced from small farmers.

Coconut soy candles are vegan: If you are looking for a vegan candle option, then coconut soy candles are a good choice. This is because they do not contain any animal products.
